Aegean

The Aegean cat is a rare, naturally occurring breed originating from the Cycladic Islands of Greece and western Turkey, and is considered Greece's only native feline variety. This breed is not officially recognized by major cat organizations but is regarded as a national treasure in Greece, often seen as both a beloved pet and a common feral cat around fishing ports.

Physical Characteristics

  • The Aegean cat is medium-sized, muscular, and typically weighs between 7–11 pounds (3–5 kg).
  • Its coat is semi-longhaired, varying from bushy in winter to shorter in summer, with predominant white coloring (covering 25–90% of the body) accented by colors like black, blue, cream, red, or tabby markings.
  • Almond-shaped eyes can appear in green, blue, or yellow shades, and ears are broad at the base with rounded tips, set widely apart.

Personality and Temperament

  • Aegeans are highly intelligent, lively, and communicative cats. They thrive on social interaction, often engaging actively with their human companions and vocalizing their needs.
  • Known for being energetic but not overly mischievous, they enjoy play and are fond of water—some may even go fishing with their owners.
  • This breed is friendly with children and other pets, making it well-suited for family environments. Aegean cats tolerate apartment living but need regular play and stimulation.

Care and Lifespan

  • The semi-longhaired coat requires moderate grooming, especially during shedding periods.
  • Aegean cats typically live for 9–15 years, with some sources noting lifespans up to 20 years.
  • They are robust and generally healthy due to their natural development as a landrace, though they are not hypoallergenic.

Unique Traits and Recognition

  • Aegean cats are especially drawn to water and have adapted over millennia to coastal Greek life, sometimes hunting local lizards or fish.
  • Formal breeding began only in the 1990s in Greece, and due to their rarity, most international owners of the breed have adopted feral Aegeans or brought them home from travel to the region.

The Aegean cat stands out for its ancient lineage, unique personality, and vibrant appearance, making it both a symbol of Greek heritage and a loving companion.
