Birman

The Birman (often called the "Sacred Cat of Burma") is a medium‑to‑large, semi‑longhaired, colour‑pointed cat known for deep blue eyes and distinct white "gloves" on all four paws. It is typically gentle, people‑oriented, and well suited as an indoor family companion.

Appearance

Birmans have a moderately muscular, medium‑to‑large body, with a rounded head, Roman nose, and medium ears. Their coat is silky, semi‑long, with a pale body and darker "points" on the face, ears, legs, and tail, plus characteristic white gloves/socks on all feet.

Common point colours include seal, blue, chocolate, lilac, red and cream, often also in tabby or tortie patterns. Eyes are always a vivid blue, which is a hallmark of the breed standard.

Temperament

Birman cats are typically affectionate, people‑focused, and enjoy following their humans around the home. They tend to be social and tolerant of children and other pets, making them good family cats when properly introduced.

Their activity level is moderate: they enjoy play and interactive games but are usually calmer than many other active breeds, and are not generally very loud or demanding.

Care and Health

Because the coat has little undercoat and a silky texture, it mats less than many longhaired breeds but still benefits from brushing a few times a week (daily in shedding seasons). Routine care should include nail trimming, dental hygiene, and regular vet checks as for any purebred cat.

Reported lifespan is around 12–15 years, with many Birmans reaching their mid‑teens when well cared for. As with other pedigree cats, some lines can be predisposed to issues such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and kidney problems, so choosing a breeder who health‑tests breeding cats is important.
