Lykoi

The Lykoi is a rare, modern cat breed known as the "wolf cat" or "werewolf cat" because of its sparse, patchy coat and striking, mask-like face. It originated from a natural genetic mutation in domestic shorthair cats that affects the hair follicles, leading to partial hairlessness and a roan (mixed white and dark hair) coat.

Origin and history

• The breed began appearing as a natural mutation in domestic shorthair cats in the last two decades, primarily in the United States.
• Breeders identified the look as consistent, confirmed it was unrelated to Sphynx or Devon Rex genes via DNA testing, and then selectively bred affected cats with healthy domestic shorthairs to establish the Lykoi as a distinct breed.
• Major registries such as TICA and CFA now recognize the Lykoi as a new, developing breed.

Appearance

• Lykoi are medium-sized, lean, and athletic, with a wedge-shaped head, large pointed ears, and big, round, often golden or yellow eyes that enhance their "werewolf" look.
• The coat is partially hairless with a roan pattern, most commonly black roan; many cats have hairless areas around the eyes, nose, muzzle, and ears, and some may even shed almost completely before regrowing hair with seasonal changes.

Temperament and behavior

• Despite their wild appearance, Lykoi are typically affectionate, social cats that bond closely with their people and often enjoy following them around the home.
• They are highly active, curious, and intelligent, with a strong prey drive; many owners describe them as dog-like in the way they play, problem-solve, and sometimes even fetch toys.

Health, grooming, and care

• Current information suggests Lykoi are generally healthy, with a life expectancy similar to other domestic cats, around 10–15 years, though long-term data is still developing because the breed is so new.
• Their sparse coat and exposed skin mean they can be more sensitive to temperature and sun, so they are usually best kept as indoor cats with warm resting spots, gentle but regular grooming, and periodic skin checks for irritation or buildup.
